Keep Your Dog’s Mind and Body Busy—Even in Long, Cold Winters

Dog Activities & Sports

At Wise Canine, we know that dogs thrive when they have both mental and physical enrichment. Fun training and dog sports aren’t just enjoyable—they’re essential for a happy, confident dog. In Whitehorse, where winters are long, dark, and cold, having activities to challenge your dog indoors or outdoors can make a huge difference for their wellbeing.

Our fun classes and dog sports are designed to be welcoming, lighthearted, and enjoyable, whether your goal is to bond with your dog, explore their natural abilities, or just stay active together. We offer a variety of activities, some of which we run on occasion based on interest. To participate, we typically require that you have a relationship with us at Wise Canine, many classes have a Basic Manners prerequisite, and all dogs should be friendly with other dogs and people.

Nosework

Nosework taps into your dog’s natural scenting abilities. Dogs learn to locate specific scents hidden in indoor spaces, outdoor areas, or vehicles. Starting with introductions to target odors, dogs progress to searching and indicating locations independently. Nosework provides mental stimulation, builds confidence, and strengthens your bond.

Instructor: Michelle Wieser, KPA-CTP, CDBC, has been teaching Nosework for over 11 years. She played a key role in bringing Nosework to Whitehorse and has guided her own dogs to Nosework titles.

Canine Parkour

Canine Parkour introduces safe, creative obstacles for your dog to explore, teaching skills like “two feet on,” “four feet on,” “under,” “in,” “around,” “back up,” and “balance.” It helps build confidence, coordination, and body awareness while strengthening teamwork in a low-pressure, fun environment—perfect for cold months when dogs need energy outlets.

Instructor: Michelle Wieser, KPA-CTP, CDBC, whose dog Flash has earned International Dog Parkour Association titles, is working toward her Canine Parkour Instructor Certification.

Tricks

Tricks classes are a fun and interactive way to engage your dog, teaching a variety of entertaining skills while building trust and clear communication. Using clicker training and reward-based methods, learning is fun and stress-free.

Instructor: Jenn Stellbrink, BSc, KPA-CTP, PST-CI, Fear Free Certified, has been teaching tricks for years and loves helping dogs and their people have fun together.

Agility Foundations

Agility Foundations focuses on core agility skills without full courses or jumps. You’ll work on impulse control, foundation stays, directional cues, handling, and confidence-building through body pressure and table work. This is a great starting point if you’d like to explore Nosework competitions or just enjoy fun, structured skill-building with your dog.

Instructor: Kieran Halliday, BASc, KPA-CTP, has completed specialized courses on teaching Agility Foundations.

Canine Freestyle

Canine Freestyle blends obedience, tricks, and dance to create a dynamic, creative partnership between you and your dog. You’ll explore the fundamentals of this exciting sport while building a vibrant connection with your dog.

Instructor: Jenn Stellbrink, BSc, KPA-CTP, PST-CI, Fear Free Certified, has completed specialty courses in Canine Freestyle and brings creativity and fun to every class.
